Conversation Starter
A question or prompt designed to get a conversation going and keep it flowing.
A conversation starter is a prompt — usually a question — chosen to open a conversation and give it somewhere to go. Unlike a simple icebreaker (which just breaks the initial silence), a good conversation starter is designed to invite a real, expandable answer.
The best conversation starters are open-ended ("what got you into that?") rather than yes/no, and genuinely curious rather than interrogating. They work because they give the other person room to share something they actually care about.
In random and anonymous chat, having a few conversation starters ready removes the pressure of the blank-slate opening moment with a stranger.
