Anonymity

The state of interacting online without your real-world identity being known.

Anonymity is the condition of participating online without your real-world identity — your legal name, face, or contact details — being attached to what you do or say.

It exists on a spectrum. True anonymity means no one, including the platform, can link activity to a real person. In practice, most services offer pseudonymity: you appear anonymous to other users, but the platform may hold some account information (like an email) needed to enforce rules.

Anonymity lowers social pressure and protects privacy, but it is a design choice paired with responsibility: platforms that offer it still need moderation so that anonymity does not become a cover for abuse.
